Chemical Metrology Division
Introduction
The Chemical Metrology Group is responsible for developing and applying techniques for the identification and measurement in the field of chemistry. The Division focuses on inorganic and organic analyses covering water/ waste water, food, minerals, ores, metals/ alloys, chemicals and air monitoring and to a lesser extent, on bio-analysis. Its objectives are to establish the National Chemical Metrology Infrastructure and develop the chemical metrology capabilities in NPSL.

- Dissemination / facilitation of testing, analysis and calibration (on-site/in-house) services to public and private sector organizations
- Air/water pollution monitoring
- Environmental impact assessment
- Consultancy regarding ISO 17025 in Chemical Metrology
- Maintaining highest accuracy in Chemical Metrology through internal quality controls
- Imparting technical training to personnel from public & private sector organizations in different areas of Chemical Metrology
- Carrying out R&D activities to cater for the needs of industrial sector in the field of Chemical Metrology
- Participation in ILC/PT programmes at National and International level related to Chemical Metrology
Description of Laboratories
Physico-Chemical Measurement Laboratory
This laboratory has analytical facilities for drinking water, waste water and industrial effluents. Samples are analyzed for different water quality parameters
using prescribed standard methods viz; pH, Electrical Conductivity, Total Hardness, Alkalinity, Total Dissolved Solids, Total Suspended Solids, Nitrates, Nitrite, Phosphates, Sulfates, Sulfides, Chlorides, Calcium, Magnesium, Dissolved Oxygen, Oil & Grease, BOD, COD etc.
Gas Emission Measurement Laboratory
The laboratory has facilities for
- Measurement of industrial emissions, (COx, SOx, NOx, etc.) smoke, vehicular exhaust & noise level
- Monitoring of ambient unconditioned air
Viscosity Measurement Laboratory
Following activities are undertaken:
- Measurement of viscosity
of oils at 200C to 1000C.
- Measurement of Refractive
Index of liquids.
- Measurement of Brix Value of fruits and Vegetables.
- Preparation of Viscosity Standard oils.
Analysis of oil / ghee samples.
Corrosion /pH Measurement Laboratory
The function of this laboratory is:
- To study corrosion in Ferrous & Non Ferrous metals/ alloys
- To detect types of corrosion damage
- To suggest preventive measures required for particular type of corrosion damage (uniform attack, pitting, localized, selective dissolution, Inter granular corrosion and cracking etc.) in the form of inhibitor, passivator
antiscalant with and without neutralizer
Spectroscopic Measurement Laboratory
- This laboratory undertakes analyses of heavy/ trace metals in ores, minerals / alloys, water / wastewater, industrial effluents etc. by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer and UV-VIS Spectrophotometer using CRMs / RMs.
- Moreover UV-Vis Spectrophotometer calibration facilities are also provided
General Materials Testing Laboratory

Food and Microbiology Laboratory
This laboratory undertakes analysis of foods/food products, confectioneries and edibles for physical testing and quality standardization / microbiological analysis using standard methods.
Moreover, microbiological analysis of all types of water, leather/leather products, fabrics, papers, medical & pharmaceutical products and biological activities can be done.

CMD provides calibration for a large number of instruments such as:

- pH measurement / calibration of pH-meters
- Estimation of Cu, Fe, K, Na, Mg, Cr, Pb, Cd, Zn in water by AAS.
- Electrical conductivity measurement/ calibration of conductivity meter
- Estimation of TDS, TSS, Total Hardness, Total Alkalinity, Cl, Ca and COD in Waste/ Drinking water samples
