Pressure Metrology Division
What is Pressure Metrology?
- Metrology is the science of measurement
- Some important parameters of the measurement system are: precision, traceability, accuracy, error and uncertainty
- Maintenance and calibration of the measurement system ensures the reliability and repeatability of the measurements
Traceability
- The laboratory reference standards and equipment used for the test / calibration are traceable to the National Reference Standards maintained at NPSL
- The NPSL maintains International Traceability through the membership of the International Beauru of Weights and Measures (BIPM), France and Asia Pacific Metrology Program (APMP) and taking part in ILCs / PTs under the regional / international bodies mentioned above
Functions of Pressure Metrology Division
- Realizing the primary standards and maintaining the national / reference standards in the field of pressure metrology
- Maintaining the traceability of pressure standards through ILCs and bilateral arrangements with NMIs of other countries particularly in Asia Pacific region
- To improve and develop measurement techniques for test / calibration in the field of pressure metrology, through conducting of specific R & D work
- To provide test and calibration services to public / private industrial sector and other stake holder especially to the defense organizations of the country
- To provide training, consultancy and advisory services to different public and private departments / organizations of the country in the field of pressure metrology
- To carry out testing & standardization of pressure measuring equipment like, hydraulic, pneumatic and vacuum gauges, dead weight tester, calibrator, switches, modules, transmitters, transducers etc
Future Goals/ Targets/ Plans
- To establish facilities of on-site calibration for the customers in the field of pressure metrology
- To enhance the pressure measurement capabilities and facilities regarding range & accuracy for
- Pressure Balance upto 60,000 psi and for low pressure upto 10-4 torr
- Improvement in existing measurement techniques including uncertainty budget in the field of pressure measurements
- Visit to concerned local industries to find out their problems related to test/calibration and extend expertise / services to them
- In-house training of the metrologists on calibration techniques in pressure measurements under provision of BMR project
- To enhance the range and accuracy of the parameters in the accredited scope related with pressure metrology
- Participation in national / international ILCs and key comparisons in pressure parameters arranged by concerned metrology bodies and NMIs
- Training of the metrologists on improved calibration techniques in pressure measurements from NMIs of the Asia Pacific Region and the developed countries
- Interaction with other NMI’s and metrology institutes regarding expert visits and the latest calibration techniques
- Realization and establishment of primary standards of pressure measurement and improvement in calibration techniques
- Extension in accredited scope related with parameters of pressure measurement, especially for low pressure measurement
- Strengthening of existing infrastructure & man power in the division
- Improvement in the Calibration Measurement Capability (CMC) of parameters related with pressure measurement
