History and Detail Functions of the Division
The Dimensional Metrology division (DMD) is the main lab of NPSL since its start (1974). It deals with the main fundamental SI quantity i.e. Length (unit: meter). It has a number of length standards and equipment used to calibrate and test length related UUTs. The Dimensional Metrology Division is mostly involved in the field of calibration of Dimensional Standards and Precision Measuring Equipments (PME), which are used to provide the traceable measurements in the industry and academia. The division is equipped for calibration of a large number of different types of standards & equipment of Length & Dimensional Measurements such as Gauge Blocks, Vernier Calipers, Micrometers, Ring Gauges, Line Length Standards, Metre Scales, Measuring Tapes, Dial Gauges, Dial Gauge Calibrators, Height Gauges, Depth Gauges & End standards etc. and particle size analysis of wet and dry samples/ salts at nano scale level.
Accredited / Non-Accredited Scope
The Scope of DMD is given below:

Metrological Traceability Mechanism
The DMD measurements are traceable to SI units through National Reference Standards, having traceability to National Metrology Institute: KRISS Korea. NMIP is a member of BIPM and APMP. In the past, the DMD primary standards got their traceability through different reputable NMIs; such as NIM China, SIRIM Malaysia, KRISS Korea, etc.

Future Strategy / Objectives / Way-Forward
The BIPM redefined the basic units in terms of seven natural constants in 2018 which came into force on 20 May 2019 (https://www.bipm.org/en/measurement-units/). To meet the upcoming challenges in realizing the new definitions of physical quantities and hence to provide the calibration facilities to industries according to the new definition of BIPM for uniform manufacturing and quality of the industrial products at global level, the NMIP desires and urges to establish cooperation in conducting Scientific-research, experimental design work, exchange experience, and spread of best practices in the field of Metrology between NMIP and international NMIs. The mechanism/ way-forward is formulated below for upgradation of DMD Laboratory of NMIP.
- Realization of “Meter” (as defined by BIPM in 2018).
- Scope extension for calibration/ testing facility for other parameters in Dimensional Metrology.
- Establishing the Optical Dimensional Metrology Laboratory in DMD.
- Establishing the Quantum Metrology Laboratory in DMD.
Design & Development Projects / R&D Planning
- Development of Optical Dimensional Metrology Lab for precise measurements at nano level.
- Development of precise linear measuring equipment based on Machine Vision Technology.
QMS & Technical Training Prospects
- Different Quality courses such as ISO-17025 & ISO-17043, Lab management course.
- Training from different NMIs.
Opportunity for Internships / Young Scientists / Students
Number of students from various universities acquired the internship and training in metrology.

History / Chronology of the NMIP
In 1974, the NPSL was established in a bungalow under the authority/administration of Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad. Later, it was then shifted to its current location comprising 1 hall and 2 to 3 rooms. From there it develops gradually to a single two-storey building in 1986. Through BMR project, in 2007, a second building was added into it and a number of equipment were commissioned and the NPSL was upgraded from time to time.
NMIP is a National Metrology Lab/ Institute (NMI) of Pakistan and is a full member of BIPM and APMP. NMIP is mandated for providing the calibration & traceability services to Public/ Private Sector, Universities/ Academic Institutes & industries for improving the trade and commerce to compete in the international market for their products.
To compete in the international trade and commerce, the traders and industries are trying to focus on manufacturing of high-quality products that qualify the relevant standards and protocols. For this, the industrialists import the latest and advanced version machines for manufacture of their products. To calibrate these technically advanced and the latest technology machines, the NMIP upgrades its infrastructure, standard and machines/ instruments from time to time to improve it and meet the industrial needs. However, there is always room for improvement.
