National Metrology Institute of Pakistan (NMIP)

As per Gazette Notification of Pakistan, NPSL has been renamed as National Metrology Institute of Pakistan (NMIP) with the mandate to work independently under the M/O Science & Technology w.e.f August 2022 after an extensive process of enactment through parliamentary legislation.

Achievements:

• International Recognition:
  • Establishment of unbroken chain of traceability of measurement standards by signing Treaty of “Meter Convention 1875” in 1974 by State of I.R. of Pakistan
  • Membership of BIPM as an NMI in 1987
  • Membership of Asia Pacific Metrology Program (APMP) in 1998
  • Signing of CIPM MRA (degree of equivalence for Testing & Calibration Results) in 2011 for globally acceptance of results
  • Member state of SAARC Coordination Committee on S & T
  • Member state of SMIIC (Standard and Measurement Institute of Islamic Countries)
  • Member State of RISCAM (Secretariat of TMB on Metrology)
• National Recognition:
  • NMIP (Lab-001) is the first Testing and Calibration laboratory in Pakistan accredited from PNAC in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025 in 2004.
  • NMIP (Lab-002) is the Proficiency Testing Provider in Pakistan accredited from PNAC in accordance with ISO/IEC 17043 in 2016.
  • Participated in the development of NQP together with PNAC and PSQCA to meet the Technical Requirements of WTO / TBTs.

Current Structure:

• As a national apex body of Metrology, it was declared as designated NMI of Pakistan for maintaining traceability of National Reference Standards as per Meter Convention 1875.
• In order to cater for a credible national metrology infrastructure, for national, industrial, and economic development, particularly to enhance exports and to harmonize measurement standards, NMIP has been separated from PCSIR and re-constituted / upgraded as a National Metrology Body, by the name of National Metrology Institute of Pakistan (NMIP), through an Act of Parliament, to meet WTO obligations.
